*We are not accepting any more skirts at this time.*
Update: June 20, 2010. All of the remaining skirts have been boxed, and have begun their long journey into Haiti by mail. Continue to be in prayer for the ladies and girls who will be receiving them in the following months.
On January 12, 2010; Port-au-Prince, Haiti and the surrounding area was rocked by a devastating earthquake. One week later I arrived in Santiago, Dominican Republic - on a trip scheduled months in advance. After feeling aftershocks, working with Haitian children, experiencing the nearness of being 120 miles away; I felt that a part of me was left behind on the island of Hispaniola when I went home seven days later.
In the months that followed - I wished desperately that there was something that I could do to ease the pain, and bring glory to God in the midst of such a disaster.
Early in March, I learned of a lady that was gathering homemade skirts to be sent to the little girls in Haiti. As I was in the process of making a few to send - my mom and I started talking about it... There is a man from our church who had already made one trip into Haiti since the earthquake, and was getting ready to take a second. We contacted him and his wife to see if there would be a possibility of doing a similar project through them. They agreed, and "Skirts for Haiti" was born! An opportunity to encourage modesty - and most importantly - to share the love of Jesus Christ in a tangible way, to the women and girls of Haiti.
Our first deadline was March 27, 2010 - we were so grateful for the response we received! Over 100 skirts and tops came from all around the country!
As I write this, the first group of skirts has already arrived in Haiti.
Even though the deadline has passed,
we have decided to continue accepting skirts.
The need is great, and this is something we would
like to keep going -
as long as we are able to do so,
and as long as the skirts keep coming.
